rokka no yuusha: summary

In the distant past, there was a monster known only as the Majin, whose power and hunger threatened to engulf the entire world. Along with its followers, the human-devouring Kyoma, the world hovered on the brink of destruction when a single person stood against the evil and managed to seal the Majin away. This person came to be known as the Saint of the Single Flower, and was revered as something close to a goddess of fate. Before disappearing from human history and memory, she separated the flower she carried into six pieces and said that, when the Majin woke up again, Six Heroes bearing a flower crest on their bodies would be chosen; they alone would be able to reseal the Majin. Twice have the Heroes of the Six Flowers been chosen, and twice more was the Majin sealed on the peninsula at the far west of the world. The story begins when the return of the Majin approachs again, and six more heroes are to be chosen.

Eight years prior to the start of the story, Adlet Myer was living in a quiet little village with his adoptive sister, in a close and peaceful community. All this changed when a single Kyoma visited the village; his name was Tgurneu and he convinced the villagers that the rise of the Majin was inevitable. However, if they elected to move their village to the land of the Majin before his return, they would find themselves on the winning side and have a better chance at survival. All the villagers agreed to this, save for Shetra, Adlet's sister, and Raina, his best friend. Tgurneu ordered the villagers to kill any who opposed the plan, and so, Shetra gave her life to give Adlet and Raina the chance to escape. The villagers continued their pursuit of the boys, and Raina too seemingly gave his life so that Adlet could continue to flee.

Adlet managed to escape, but the personal cost was so great that the only conclusion he could reach was that he needed the strength to never lose anything precious to him again. He sought out the hermit Atro Spiker, who it was rumored could teach others the strength to defeat the Kyoma, but when he arrived at the top of Atro's mountain where he lived, he was emaciated, near starvation. Atro refused him at first, saying Adlet was weak and that there was no point in teaching him, as all the things he lost were gone forever. Adlet, however, would not be turned away, and Atro took him in as his apprentice.

His ten years with Atro were physically and emotionally trying, as Atro often used physical force to instill his lessons, and was in no way a comfort mentally for Adlet. Others came to apprentice under Atro during his time there, but none of them lasted, unable to stand up to Atro's abuse. Adlet alone managed to stick it out, despite having no innate talent to aid him; in return, he learned many methods to kill Kyoma, becoming strong while also learning much about the science needed to craft tools and weapons.

When he was 18, Adlet left Atro to visit a temple of the Goddess of Fate. In order to be eligble to become one of the Six Heroes, one had to visit one of her temples and display the reasons for one's candidacy. Adlet chose to crash the tournament in Piena, taking on the two finalists in order to demonstrate his skill. Though he defeated both his opponents, he was placed under arrest for his disrespecting the ceremony and placed in confinement. While there, he first met Nashetania, the princess of Piena and the Saint of Blades, though he was unaware of her identity at the time.

Then, one night, Adlet received the Crest of the Six Flowers on the back of his right hand. At the same time, so did Nashetania, and she freed him from his prison so they could go and meet the rest of their chosen companions. As it is custom for the Heroes to converge at the neck of the Wailing Demon Territory, the name given to the land of the Kyoma, they headed west. As they got closer, they encountered a large group of Kyoma attacking villagers fleeing from their town. Hearing that someone was left behind, Adlet split with Nashetania in order to help return to the village. However, when he got there, instead of finding a frightened villager, Adlet encountered Fremy Speeddraw, the Saint of Gunpowder and another Hero. Adlet tried to convince Fremy to join him and Nashetania when she showed hostility toward him; though she refused, stating that the others would want to kill her if they met, Adlet felt he could not leave her alone and chose to follow her, stealing her weapons bag to force her to accompany him.

Together they came across a fortress that had been attacked by Kyoma, and learned of a barrier that had been created years ago by the Saint of Fog; if activated, the barrier would prevent anyone from the main land to travel to the peninsula and vice versa. The plan was to activate the barrier to trap the Kyoma on the main land so the Six Heroes might have less enemies to fight along their journey. Continuing their travels toward the land bridge, Adlet and Fremy met Nashetania and a soldier from her country, Goldof, another Hero. The two did indeed try to kill Fremy, but Adlet managed to convince them to cease their attempts, revealing Fremy's status as one of the Six Flowers. The four of them proceeded to continue their travels together when they were attacked by Kyoma near the barrier's temple. Nashetania urged Adlet to get to the temple to protect it, but when he arrived the door was closed, unable to be opened. Using a bomb, Adlet blasted the door open; in that moment, however, a great fog rose up. It seemed as though the fog barrier had been activated.

The others soon arrived at the temple, questioning Adlet as to why the barrier was raised and by whom, but as the barrier rose just as he opened the door, he had no answer for them. Another complication came to light soon after, however, with the arrivals of Chamot, Maura, and Hans; all three also bore the Crest that designated them as Heroes.

There were only ever Six Heroes, and yet there were seven individuals claiming to belong. Someone was a fake. While everyone watched the others with suspicion, it was not long before the others concluded that the fake had to be Adlet, as he was the first person to the temple and the only one who could have activated the barrier. Unable to prove his genuine status, Adlet was forced to flee, taking Fremy as a hostage so that he could escape.

With the barrier in place, there was no where Adlet could truly run to, all seven of them remaining trapped until the barrier was deactivated or the one to activate it was killed. Adlet did his best to search for clues and formulate theories as to the truth of the barrier and the seventh, while also doing his best to convince the others of his innocence. Unable to convince Fremy of the truth, he let her return to the others; later, Adlet confronted Hans and, after a tense fight, was able to gain Hans' trust. Long story short too late and after many fights against the others, Adlet managed to discover the truth: the fog that first rose after the temple was opened was ordinary fog. The Kyoma and the seventh had kidnapped the Saint of the Sun and had her raise the temperature of the area, then killed her when Adlet opened the temple. With the Saint's power gone, the temperature dropped drastically, creating the fog. Only later was the barrier raised; Hans and Chamot discovered instructions on how to raise the barrier and these revealed Nashetania to be the impostor. With the truth exposed, the princess confessed, then did her best to escape. Unfortunately she succeeded and they lost sight of her.

Having been badly wounded after his fights with the others (they were attempting to kill him, after all), it took a few days for Adlet to recover, but soon enough the Heroes readied themselves to depart the temple and head for the peninsula. Before they could leave, however, they were joined by Rolonia, the Saint of Fresh Blood...who also had the Crest of the Six Flowers. There was still an impostor within their midst. Unable to take the time to find out which person was the fake, however, they decided to continue on their journey as seven, certain that the fake would be discovered along the way.

Soon after entering the Wailing Demon Territory, the Heroes had an encounter with the Kyoma Tgurneu, one of the three Kyoma commanders. However, though they were unable to defeat him, they managed to escape and seek shelter in a cave protected by a barrier left by the Saint of the Single Flower. They were surrounded by Tgurneu's forces, however, so Adlet took the time while there to formulate a strategy against him. There was something about their first encounter with the Kyoma that bothered him, however; with Hans, Goldof, and Rolonia, he returned to the hill where they fought Tgurneu so that he could investigate. While there, Adlet was able to surmise Tgurneu's true form: a fig fruit that, when consumed, could transfer his power to other Kyoma. This meant that in order to defeat Tgurneu, simply killing the Kyoma he inhabited at the time would not be enough, for he could have another one consume part of him and become him; they would need to get the fig fruit to defeat him.

Unbeknownst to Adlet, Maura had a contract with Tgurneu that was about to become due; she had promised to kill one of the Flowers in return for the release of her daughter from a parasite Kyoma with which she had been infected. While Adlet and the others were away, she tried to defeat Tgurneu on her own, as killing him would also free her daughter. She was unsuccessful, and so she eventually fought and killed Hans. However, she had anticipated this possibility and had trained Rolonia in advance to use her Saint power to bring him back to life. Adlet and the others found her actions appalling, but as they did not automatically condemn her as the seventh, they all continued on their journey together.

Their next obstacle was a valley across their path, whose depths were guarded by boiling liquid impossible to pass. Before Adlet or the others could devise a way across it, however, Goldof suddenly left the group and went off on his own, stating he had to save Nashetania. Ever since the betrayal of his princess, he had been silent, unable or unwilling to engage with the others, though still following their path as a Hero nonetheless. Unable to allow a companion to abandon the group, Adlet had them all follow Goldof until they reached a lava belt. There they fell into a trap laid by the princess and her Kyoma companion, Dozzu, another of the three commanders. Nashetania activated a Saint Instrument called the Blade Gem, which she had planted within Chamot's stomach awhile before. With Chamot dying, the only way to deactivate the weapon was to force Nashetania or to kill her. Adlet, Fremy, and Rolonia teamed up together to find her, but were unable to locate her; the nature of the instrument required Nashetania to remain within a certain distance to maintain its effectiveness, however she was nowhere to be found. Meanwhile they also had to contend with Goldof, who insisted on protecting the princess even if it meant fighting them.

Though Adlet was unable to discover the truth of the situation in time, Goldof managed to find Nashetania and save her; she and Dozzu had gone to Tgurneu for help, only for him to capture the princess and place her within the stomach of one of his subordinates. This Kyoma was able to hide among the rocks of the lava belt, concealing her in plain sight. Once she was freed, she released Chamot from the Blade Gem and, though wary to do so, the seven heroes formed a temporary alliance with Dozzu and Nashetania, that they might defeat Tgurneu together.

With the addition of Dozzu to their group, the seven of them learned of the existence of Tgurneu's secret weapon, called the Black Barren Flower. However, Dozzu had no knowledge what exactly this flower entailed, only that Tgurneu had a Temple of Fate (for the worship of the Goddess) built within the Fainting Mountains, and that it might contain the secret behind the weapon. It was now seventeen days since the Majin had awakened, leaving the Heroes with little time left to seal it away again; the decision as to their next course of action was left to Adlet who, despite being under greater suspicion as the seventh once more, was still looked to as the leader of the group. He decided that it could prove fatal for them not to investigate, so they headed for the temple to discover what they could.

Standing between the group and the temple was an army of corpse soldiers, humans who had been brought to the Wailing Demon Territory and subsequently turned into a zombie army, controlled by a Kyoma known only as Dark Specialist Number 9. The army lay in wait within a forest through which they had to pass in order to reach the temple; the Heroes took temporary refuge inside a hut outside of the forest to discuss their next course of action.

While they were in the hut, Adlet discovered a piece of flute that he immediately recognized as belonging to someone from his old village. The discovery was enough to tell him that the people of his hometown were, most likely, a part of the corpse army standing in their way. Upon questioning Dozzu, Adlet confirmed that it was quite likely to be true; the Kyoma also told him that the corpse soldiers were dead, or as good as dead, for the manner in which they were controlled necessitated that an insect be attached to the backs of their necks, inserting its limbs into the victims' spines and brains. Despite hearing this, Adlet hesitated on making the decision he knew must be made, and retreated to another part of the hut to decide.

While he struggled with his feelings toward his former neighbors, the hatred he felt toward them for their betrayal, and the loneliness of knowing he was truly the last survivor, Rolonia and Nashetania got into a debate about what to do. Rolonia insisted that they had to help the corpse soldiers, that they were Heroes and it was their job to protect the happiness of all the humans. The others tried to convince her that it was a pointless and foolish endeavor, and Adlet himself found her kindness to be too painful. Making his decision, he told Rolonia to forget helping the soldiers; they had to kill Number 9 and any corpse soldiers that got in their way would also have to be killed.

The group then devised a plan to force Number 9 toward the south of the forest, where Maura and Fremy would be waiting to snipe him. Hans created a diversion and trapped a number of corpse soldiers to the north of the forest, and the rest of the group entered the forest to herd the Kyoma into their trap. Things seemed to be going well at first, until Adlet realized that Rolonia was still trying to save the soldiers and causing trouble for the rest of them. She insisted that the soldiers were alive, as evidenced by writing on their arms and the fact that some of them spoke, pleading for help. Adlet tried to convince her that such things were a trap set by Tgurneu to delay them, but unfortunately Rolonia fell for the trap and, per the soldiers' pleas, separated from the group in search of a cave. Unable to let her go off on her own, Adlet followed her.

At the cave, there was indeed a trap, and Rolonia would have been killed had Hans not fortuitously arrived in time to save her. And yet still Rolonia insisted that the soldiers were alive, for the humans who had participated in the trap knew nothing of the writing on the arms, and that one in particular would have writing on his right arm and had information regarding Tgurneu. Realizing that he too had seen evidence of someone trying to send a message, Adlet believed her, and the three started searching the forest for the soldier. Not long into the search, however, the corpse soldiers started screaming and flailing about; Fremy had managed to kill Number 9 and the soldiers, if they were not dead before, certainly were dying then.

Adlet started calling out to the soldier, encouraging him to not give up, that they were looking for him. Then, nearby, Adlet heard an attempt at singing; the song was one from his old village. Following the song, Adlet found the soldier only to discover he was none other than his childhood friend Raina. With Rolonia's help, Raina's parasite was removed and he regained his voice long enough to tell them something of the Black Barren Flower: that it was a woman with white hair and a single horn coming out of her forehead.

Unknown to Raina, he had perfectly described Fremy. Adlet insisted that the three of them keep the information a secret, certain that if the others found out, they would surely kill Fremy on the spot. Reuniting with Fremy and Goldof, who had been searching the forest for Adlet and the others, the five of them journeyed through the forest to rendezvous with the rest of the group and continue on toward the Temple of Fate.
